XL98: "MS Query Not Installed" Error Starting MS Query When Getting External Data (179686)

In Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, when you point to Get External
Data on the Data menu, and then click either Create New Query or Run
Database Query, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Excel could not start Microsoft Query because it is not
installed. To install it, run the Value Pack Installer and select the
Microsoft Query option in the Data Access category. If Microsoft Query
is already installed, run it standalone to force it to register with
the system.
You receive this error message even though Microsoft Query is already
installed on the computer.
CAUSE
This problem may occur if Microsoft Query is not properly registered on the
computer. Typically, this problem occurs only the first time you attempt to
use Microsoft Query.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, use either of the following methods .
Method 1: Try Clicking the Menu Item Again
If you receive the error message in this article, click OK. Then, point to
Get External Data on the Data menu, and click either Create New Query or
Run Database Query.
Method 2: Run Microsoft Query by Itself
To run Microsoft Query by itself (as a stand-alone program), double-click
the Microsoft Query icon, which is located in the Microsoft Office
98:Office folder on your hard disk. After Microsoft Query starts correctly,
quit the program, start Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, and then
click either Create New Query or Run Database Query on the Data menu.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products
listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem
and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it
becomes available.

You can install Microsoft Query on your computer by double-clicking the
Value Pack Installer, which is located in the Value Pack folder on your
Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition compact disc.
After Microsoft Query has been installed, you can use it from within
Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition. However, the first time you attempt
to use Microsoft Query, you may receive the error message in this article.
When you use Microsoft Query a second time, the program should start
correctly.
