PUB98: Mail Merge Field Names and Merged Data May be Truncated (179529)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 98

This article was previously published under Q179529

SYMPTOMS

When you perform a mail merge in Publisher, the field names may be truncated when viewing field codes. When you are in Show Field Codes mode you may find that field names containing more than 60 characters are truncated in your publication. You may also notice when you merge your results, fields containing more than 255 characters of data will be truncated as well.

CAUSE

Publisher limits the length of a specific field name to 60 characters. Also, when merged into Publisher all field data is truncated to 255 characters. This is still true even if the database is created outside of Publisher, and the database supports field names and field data of greater lengths. Publisher cannot exceed these limits. This is by design.
