OL98: (IMO) Connection Error Using MCI Internet Mail (179440)

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Outlook 98 or first connect to your MCI Internet Mail server, you may receive the following error message:
Dial-up networking settings not valid. Please check your password.
Following this message, you may notice that sent mail does not leave your Outbox.

RESOLUTION

This behavior may result from incorrect settings in the Internet Mail service properties. Follow these steps to troubleshoot this behavior:
  1. In Outlook on the Tools menu, click Accounts.
  2. Click to select your mail account, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Servers tab. In the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) box type the following, in lower case:

    mailrelay.mci2000.com

  4. In the Incoming Mail (POP3) box type the following, in lower case, where xx is a number from 01-99 assigned by MCI:

    mailxx.mci2000.com

    NOTE: If your mail server information is different than that which is shown above, use the server name provided by MCI.
  5. In the Account Name box, type the user's e-mail name up to, but not including the @ symbol. In the Password box, type your password.
  6. Click OK. Click Close.
Exit and restart Outlook and send a test message.

The MCI Internet Mail system uses one server for receipt of messages and a second server for sending messages. In the Internet Mail service profile, the Internet Mail server box identifies the mail server from which you receive mail. The advanced options of the Internet Mail service profile enable you to name the sending e-mail server.
