The information in this article applies to:
This article was previously published under Q179206 SYMPTOMS
When you perform a custom installation of Microsoft Publisher 98 on a
Windows NT 4.0-based computer, you may receive the following error message
when Setup tries to update your computer:
Microsoft Publisher 98 Setup was not completed successfully.
CAUSE
This error occurs if the following registry key is corrupted or if it is
missing from the Windows Registry:
KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager
\Environment\path
RESOLUTION
To perform a custom installation of Publisher without receiving the error
message, the registry key mentioned in the "Cause" section must be seen by
Publisher. You can use either of the following methods to create this
registry key.
Method 1: Install Office 97 First
Install Office 97 before you install Publisher 98. Office 97 will create
this registry key if the Office Setup program does not find it.
Method 2: Reinstall Windows NT 4.0
Reinstall Windows NT 4.0 and upgrade to Service Pack 3. This will create the registry key for the environment path that Publisher Setup looks for during setup.
