PUB98: Error Installing to Network server (179175)
The information in this article applies to:
This article was previously published under Q179175 SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to perform an administrative installation (Setup /a) of
Microsoft Publisher to a network server that is running a shared/network
installation of Windows, you may receive the following error message:
A directory into which setup should install files is read-
only. Publisher may not install correctly. If the directory
is a network directory, please insure that your network
administrator has installed the proper files.
CAUSE
This message occurs if the user does not have the necessary privileges
to write files to the Windows network directory. As a result,
Microsoft Publisher Setup will not work.
Microsoft Publisher requires a number of files to be located in the
Windows directory. The Publisher Setup program attempts to write these
files but will fail if the user does not have the correct write
privileges to the Windows directory.
RESOLUTION
To correctly install Publisher on a shared/network installation of
Windows,
log in as Supervisor, Administrator, or someone who possesses full
privileges.
NOTE: To run Publisher on a shared/network installation of Windows, you do
not need to have the ability to write to the Windows directory; however,
write privileges are required to run Publisher Setup.
