IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. SUMMARY

When you open and save publications in Microsoft Publisher, the initial folder suggested by Publisher to save and open publications is commonly called the working folder or directory. In the Publisher options dialog box, there is no way to specify a default folder. However, Publisher uses a registry setting to determine this folder. This registry setting may be changed to specify an alternate folder. This article explains how to modify the registry setting to specify a different working folder.

NOTE: In earlier versions of Publisher, you could change the Start In field in a shortcut to the Publisher program to achieve a similar behavior. This does not work with Publisher 98.

  2. Start the Registry Editor.

    1. Click the Start button, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type:

          HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Publisher

  4. On the right side, you will see two columns, Name and Data. Double-click the value named DefaultPath; this opens the Edit String dialog box.
  5. In the Value Data box, type the full path to your default folder, and then click OK.
The next time you start Publisher, the default folder you specified is used.
