PUB98: Error Running Setup if Not in Administrator Group (178837)

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Microsoft Publisher Setup program on Microsoft Windows NT, and you are not part of the Administrator group for your computer, you may receive this error message:
Only users with Administrator privileges may install applications.
followed by this message:
Microsoft Publisher Setup was not completed successfully.

CAUSE

You must be a member of the Administrator group to install Publisher.

RESOLUTION

Method 1: Join the Administrator Group

Ask your system administrator to add you to the Administrator group for your computer. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Determine the name of the computer on which you want to install Publisher:

    1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click the Network Control Panel icon.
    3. Click the Identification tab. Write down the Computer Name.
  2. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.
  3. In the Open box, enter the following information:

    usrmgr <Computer Name>

    where <Computer Name> is the name you wrote down in step 1.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Double-click Administrator Group (at the bottom of User Manager).
  6. In the Local Group Properties dialog box, click Add.
  7. Select the correct domain and add the user to the Administrator group.
You should now be able to install Publisher.

Method 2: Have the system administrator install Publisher for you
