PRJ98: Duration Decreased or Changed to Zero When Leveling (178827)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q178827

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, if you level tasks in a project, you may see that durations are reduced from their original value or changed to zero. You also may see that one or more task Finish dates are changed to 12/31/2049 11:59 P.M. when dates later are expected. Start dates may be changed to 1/1/1984 8:00 A.M., depending if the project is scheduled from start or from finish.

NOTE: After leveling, you can not Undo the changes that leveling makes.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when Resource Leveling attempts to delay a task beyond the boundary dates for Microsoft Project, which are 1/1/1984 12:00 A.M. to 12/31/2049 11:59 P.M.

For example, if resource leveling attempts to move a tasks Finish date to be later than 12/31/2049 11:59 P.M., the result will be that the tasks Finish date will be changed to 12/31/2049 11:59 P.M. and a reduced duration, or a duration of zero. If resource leveling attempts to move a tasks Start date to be earlier than 1/1/1984 12:00 A.M., the result will be that the tasks Start date will be changed to 1/1/1984 12:00 A.M. and a reduced duration, or a duration of zero.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.
