PUB98: Problems w/4-Letter .Html Extension on Some Systems (178813)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 98

This article was previously published under Q178813

SUMMARY

If you are going to use Publisher to publish a Web site to a network or Internet service that does not support long file names, you must change the default Web Site properties before you publish.

By default, Publisher gives its Web pages the.html file name extension. For example, the first page of your publication might be called Index.html and the second page, Page2.html.

If you copy these files to a computer that does not support long file names, the names will be changed. For example, Page2.html changes to Page2~1.htm. If the name of a file is changed, the hyperlinks to that page will not work.

You can configure Publisher to use the three-letter .htm extension.

MORE INFORMATION

Publisher defaults to using long file names for HTML documents because the .html extension is used more frequently on the World Wide Web than the three-letter .htm extension.

The following are examples of some networks or Internet services that do not support long file names:
  • Network shares on computers running Windows for Workgroups
  • Network shares on Novell NetWare networks (if the Novell OS/2 name space module is not installed)
  • Network shares on Apple Macintosh computers*
  • America Online (AOL)**
* While the Apple Macintosh operating system does support long file names, the utilities to copy MS-DOS/Windows files to those computers usually do not.

** The America Online servers do support long file names. However, some of the utilities to transfer files to this service do not.

Before you publish a Web site to one of these services, do the following:
  1. On the File menu, click Web Site Properties.
  2. In the File Name Extension list, click htm.
  3. Click OK.
