PUB98: Pattern-Filled Objects Print Badly When Pasted as Picture (178807)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 98

This article was previously published under Q178807

SYMPTOMS

If you copy a Publisher drawing object that has a pattern fill and then paste it as a picture, the pattern fill will print incorrectly to 300 dpi or higher resolution printers.

CAUSE

Publisher patterns are made of bitmap tiles. When you print these tiles to a 300 dpi or higher resolution printer, Publisher automatically increases the size of these tiles to make them print well at high resolutions. If you paste a Publisher object as a picture, Publisher does not know what kind of fills are in that picture and therefore cannot scale the tiles when the object is printed.

NOTE: If you copy a WordArt frame and paste it as a picture, WordArt puts special comments in the picture to tell Publisher what kind of fill patterns it contains. Therefore, Publisher can correctly scale the tiles when it prints this type of object.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
