PUB98: Navigation Bars Don't Update when in the Background (178794)

SYMPTOMS

If you create a blank web site and then insert a Web Navigation Bar from the Design Gallery and send it to the background, the navigation bar will not update Automatically when you add a page to the web site. It will not update even if you insert a new page and select the "Add hyperlink to Web navigation bar" option in the New Page dialog box.

CAUSE

This problem is caused by the way that Publisher synchronizes objects. Publisher is unable to synchronize an object that is sent to the Background.

WORKAROUND

There are 2 possible workarounds to this problem.

Workaround 1

Move the navigation bar to the foreground by following these steps:
  1. Select the navigation bar on the background.
  2. On the Arrange menu, click Send To Foreground.

Workaround 2

One other way to resolve this problem is to insert a new Web Navigation Bar on the Foreground, send it to the Background, and then deleting the existing Web Navigation Bar on the Background.
  1. After inserting the new page, click the Insert menu, and select Design Gallery Object.
  2. From the Categories list, select Web Navigation Bars. Select the desired Web Navigation Bar on the right, and click Insert Object. This will insert an updated Navigation bar object with links to all your pages included.
  3. Click the Arrange menu, and select Send to Background. This will sent the new Web Navigation Bar to the background.
  4. Press Ctrl+M to go to the Background.
  5. Select the old Web Navigation Bar, and press Ctrl+X to delete it.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
