If you open a Microsoft Excel workbook in Microsoft Outlook 97,
make changes to the workbook, and then save the workbook, you may receive the following error message:
Your changes could not be saved to filename.xls, but were saved to a temporary document named xxxxxxxx. Close the existing document, open the temporary document, and then save it under a new name.
If you open a Microsoft Word document in Outlook, make changes to the document, and then save the document, you may get the following error message:
Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error (path and filename.doc)
CAUSE
This problem can occur in Excel when you open an Excel file from a folder that is accessed by means of a shortcut on the Outlook toolbar. Excel may not be able to save the file successfully. When you access a folder from the Outlook toolbar, the View feature displays the information from the file, such as, the file owner, which the View feature reads from the file.
Excel saves the file and creates a temporary file to the folder that Excel is going to save. When Excel creates the temporary file, Outlook scans the file for the information that is going to be stored by the View feature. As a result, Outlook may have locked the temporary file when Excel attempts to rename the file in the final stage of a save procedure. Excel cannot rename the file and you can receive an error message similar to the error message in the "Symptoms" section.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, rename the temporary file by using Windows NT Explorer.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
