XL98: Movie Object Begins Scrolling When You Use Arrow Keys (178762)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q178762

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, if you use either the LEFT ARROW key or the RIGHT ARROW key to step backward or forward through a movie object inserted into a worksheet, the movie object itself may begin to scroll left or right within the worksheet.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if, as a result of pressing either the LEFT ARROW key or the RIGHT ARROW key, you reach either the beginning or the end of the movie.

When this occurs, the movie object is selected, and handles appear at the corners and edges of the movie object. As soon as the handles appear, pressing any arrow key moves the movie object in that direction within the worksheet.

WORKAROUND

To prevent this problem from occurring, do not use the arrow keys to step backward or forward through a movie. Instead, use the buttons on the movie control to step backward or forward:
  1. Select the movie object by clicking it.
  2. On the Movie toolbar, click the Show Controller tool.
You can also display the movie control by clicking the filmstrip picture, located in the lower-left corner of the movie object.

The movie control appears immediately below the movie object. To play the movie, click the Play button (>). To step through the movie, click either the Step Backward button (<|) or the Step Forward button (|>).

Note that when the movie control is visible, the problem described above does not occur.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

In Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, you can insert a movie object into a worksheet by following these steps:
  1. On the Insert menu, click Movie.
  2. In the dialog box, select the movie that you want to insert. Then, click Open.
You can also insert a movie by clicking the Insert Movie tool on the Movie toolbar.

After the movie has been inserted, you can play it by clicking the Play tool on the Movie toolbar or by clicking the Play button on the movie control.

While a movie is playing, you can step backward or forward through the movie by pressing the LEFT ARROW key or the RIGHT ARROW key, or by using the buttons on the movie control.
