PRJ98: Setup Stops Responding When Updating Your System (178704)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Project 98 for Windows
- the operating system: Microsoft Windows NT 3.51
- the operating system: Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
This article was previously published under Q178704 SYMPTOMS
When you install Microsoft Project 98 on a computer running Windows NT,
when Setup checks for installed components or when all files have been
copied and Setup updates your system, Setup may stop responding.
The only way to close Setup when it stops responding is by way of Windows
NT Task manager.
CAUSE
A service being run by the Windows NT operating system may be interfering
with the Setup program to either read or write to the system registry.
WORKAROUND
You can temporarily stop a service by using the Services icon in Control
Panel.
To stop a service, follow these steps:
- Click Start, and then point to Settings.
- Click Control Panel.
- Double-click the Services icon.
- For each service that has Started in the Status column
except for Workstation, select the service and click the
Stop button. If you get an error stopping the service or the
Stop button is grayed out, go to the next service in the
list.
- After stopping all services, click Close.
NOTE: Do not click any other option buttons in the Services dialog box. Changes made to these options may cause you computer to function improperly.
To run setup again for Microsoft Project 98, follow these steps:
- Click Start, and then point to Settings.
- Click Control Panel.
- Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
- In the Add/Remove Programs dialog box, click
Install.
- Click Next. Be sure the Microsoft Project 98 compact disc is
in the CD Rom drive.
- Click Finish.
If a service was causing Setup to fail, Project should now install without
any problems. After the installation is complete, services that you stopped
will be restarted when you restart Windows NT.
