The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q178701

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, if you assign a resource to a task using the resource ID number, you may receive the following error message:
The resource does not exist.

Try one of the following:

Check to see whether you typed the correct ID number.

If you want to add a resource to the resource pool, type the name of the resource in the Resource Name field.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you try to assign a resource using the Resource ID number in an inserted project. In an inserted project, only the first resource can be assigned using its ID number. If you assign resources an ID number greater than one, the error described in the "Symptoms" section will occur.

WORKAROUND

To workaround this behavior, do either of the following.

Method 1

Type the resource's name in the Resource Name field.

Method 2

Assign resources to tasks using the Resource Assignment dialog box. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, point to Resources, and then click Assign Resources.
  2. Select the task you want to assign a resource to.
  3. In the Resource Assignment dialog box, click on the resource you want to assign to the selected task.
  4. Click the Assign button.

NOTE: You can repeat steps 2, 3, and 4 as many times as needed.
  5. Click the Close button when finished with the Resource Assignment dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.
