PRJ98: IntelliPoint SmartSpeed Feature Doesn't Work with Project (178694)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when you edit a task, resource or resource assignment note, or edit a header, footer or legend, or you edit a workgroup message, Microsoft Project may stop responding and you may receive the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
If you click the Details button, you receive the following error message:
WINPROJ caused and invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at <address>.

CAUSE

The SmartSpeed StepSaver feature of the Microsoft IntelliPoint mouse software is incompatible with Microsoft Project 98. This problem occurs only on Microsoft Windows 95/98.

WORKAROUND

To turn off the SmartSpeed feature, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Mouse icon.
  3. On the StepSavers tab, click to clear the SmartSpeed check box (to turn off this feature). Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.
