PUB98: Large Graphics May Not Convert Correctly (178612)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 98

This article was previously published under Q178612

SYMPTOMS

If you add a picture frame that is larger than approximately 24"x24" to a publication, and you attempt to publish or preview the publication as a Web site, the picture may not convert. When you view the Web page, that picture may appear blank or as a partial image.

CAUSE

When you preview or publish a publication as a Web site, Publisher converts everything that is not enclosed within a text frame to a CompuServe GIF formatted graphic. During this process, Publisher converts all non-text elements to approximately 100 dots-per-inch (dpi) bitmaps and then uses the GIF graphics filter to convert these bitmaps to .gif files. Because large graphics require more memory for conversion, the conversion may fail and you may not receive an error message.

RESOLUTION

Whenever possible use smaller, less complex objects on Web pages to improve the amount of time it takes to download your Web page. Avoid using large graphics because they will cause your Web page to take a very long time to download.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
