PUB98: Cannot Create Online Document Error Publishing Web (178610)

Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if
a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring

SYMPTOMS
When you click "Web Site Preview" on the File menu, you may receive the
following error message:
Publisher cannot create your online document because it cannot locate
the GIF export filter.
Please run setup again to reinstall the missing file. For more
information on running setup, press F1 now.
CAUSE
This error message occurs if your GIF import/export filter (Gifimp32.flt)
is missing, outdated, or corrupted. It may also occur if the Windows
Registry entries for the GIF import/export filter are missing or corrupted.
RESOLUTION
You can determine whether the problem is caused by the filter file,
Gifimp32.flt, or by a problem with the Windows registry by doing the
following:
- In Publisher, click Create New Publication on the File menu.
- In the Publisher startup dialog box, click the Blank Page tab and
then click the Web Page icon. Click OK.
- Draw a single text frame and type a few words into it.
- On the File menu, click Web Site Preview.
If you do not receive the error message, replace the Gifimp32.flt file. If
you do receive the error, remove the registry entries for the GIF filter
and reinstall Publisher.
To Replace Gifimp32.flt- Rename the file Gifimp32.flt. By default, this file is located in
the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Grphflt
- You can copy this file from the following folder on the Publisher CD:
D:\Shared\Grphflt
assuming that D: is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive. If you
have Publisher on disk, you can replace this file by running
Publisher Setup and clicking the Reinstall button in the
Maintenance Mode Setup dialog box.
To Remove the GIF Import Filter Registry EntriesWARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that
may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot
guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor
can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And
Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete
Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics
in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit
it.
If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair
Disk (ERD).
- Start the Registry Editor and delete the following keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Gif
HKEY_LOCAL_MCHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Graphics Filters\Import\GIF
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Graphics Filters\Export\GIF
- Open the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs
- Delete the Value called:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Grphflt\Gifimp32.flt
- Exit the Registry Editor.
- Start Publisher. When you start Publisher, it checks the registry for
the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Graphics\Filters\Export\GIF
If this key is missing, Publisher will add the key.
