PUB98: "Cannot Recolor Object"; Spot Color Problem with EPS (178578)

If you try to recolor an Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) image, you will
receive the following message:
Cannot recolor object.
Publisher cannot recolor objects that are Postscript files or compressed
images.
This can cause a problem if you want to print your publication using spot
color and you want your EPS image to print in a spot color.
CAUSE
While Publisher can import EPS information, it cannot directly edit that
information. Publisher stores the EPS information until it is time to print
it.
RESOLUTION
When you print spot color, what you really get is a separate black and
white sheet for each color of ink you want to use on your page. You use
these sheets to create printing plates. You can print each plate using
whatever color of ink you want.
For example, you have a page that contains a text box and an EPS image. You
want the text to print in black and the EPS image to print in blue.
- Recolor the text to blue.
- On the File menu, click Outside Printer Setup.
- Choose Blue as the spot color.
- Print the page.
What you will get is the following:
- A sheet labeled "Spot Color 1" that has the text on it.
- A sheet labeled "Black" that has the EPS image on it.
When you deliver this job to your printing service, tell them to print the
Spot Color 1 plate in black ink and the Black plate in blue ink.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products
listed at the beginning of this article.
