XL98: "Missing or Illegal Field Name" Using Advanced Filter (178461)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Advanced Filter command in Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, you may receive the following error message:
The extract range has a missing or illegal field name.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if one or more column headings in the list of data are missing even though the data record Field Information for the missing column is present.

NOTE: This problem does not occur in earlier versions of Microsoft Excel.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the Advanced Filter command a second time immediately after receiving the error message; when you do this, you do not receive the error message again. In addition, if you use column headings for all of the fields, you do not receive the error message.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
