When you run Program Manager, you may not see any program groups or icons.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you install Windows 98 into a folder that does not contain an earlier version of Windows.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, you can manually create program groups and program items within the program groups. To do so, use the appropriate steps:

Creating Program Groups

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type progman, and then click OK.
  3. In Program Manager, click New on the File menu, click Program Group, and then click OK.
  4. In the Description box, type a name to describe the program group.

NOTE: The name that you type in the Description box is the name that appears on the title bar of the program group window.
  5. In the Group File box, type the name you want for the program group file name.

NOTE: The file name has a .grp extension. For example:

    Groupname.grp

  6. Click OK.

Creating Program Items

  1. Open the program group to which you want to add an item. To open a program group, click the program group name on the Window menu.
  2. On the File menu, click New, click Program Item, and then click OK.
  3. In the Description box, type a name to describe the item.

NOTE: The name that you type in the Description box is the name that appears below the item's icon in the program group.
  4. In the Command Line box, type the path and the file name of the program file.
  5. In the Working Directory box, type the path to the folder in which the program file is located.
  6. Click OK.
