WD98: Menu Bar Disappears After Customization (178323)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q178323

SYMPTOMS

When you view the menu bar by clicking it in the list of toolbars (on the Tools menu, click Customize), when you click Close, the menu bar flashes for a moment and then disappears.

CAUSE

The menu bar is controlled by the Macintosh Operating System (OS). When you view the menu bar from the list of toolbars, you view a copy of the menu bar for customization purposes. When you click Close on the Customize panel, the menu bar copy disappears.

MORE INFORMATION

To customize the menu bar, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Customize.
  2. On the Toolbars tab, click to select the Menu Bar check box.
  3. To add a menu item to the menu bar, click the Commands tab.
  4. Select a Category (for example, View), and then click to select the item you want to add to the menu bar from the Commands list.
  5. While holding down the mouse button, drag the item to the menu bar.

NOTE: While you can add a command to the menu bar, you can only view menu items you add to the menu bar. For example, in the View category, Ruler is a command, but Toolbars is a menu. If you add Ruler to the menu bar, you will receive the following warning:
Only Menus will appear on the menu bar, all other controls will be hidden.
In the list of commands, a menu is denoted by an arrow to the right of the command name.
