XL98: Type 1 Error Deleting a Record with the Data Form (178306)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the data form to delete a record, you may receive the following error message:
The application "Microsoft Excel" has unexpectedly quit, because an error of type 1 occurred. You should save your work in other open applications and restart the computer.
Then, Microsoft Excel quits.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You are using the data form to delete a record from a list. -and-

  • The list extends to the last row (row 65,536) of the worksheet. -or-

  • The worksheet contains a defined name called "database" that refers to the last row (row 65,536) of the worksheet.

WORKAROUND

To workaround this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Select the record you want to delete.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  3. Click Shift cells up, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

If this problem occurs, Microsoft Excel closes. When you open the workbook again, the record you tried to delete is still in the list.
