SUMMARY

This article describes how to create a link to an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) channel using Microsoft Chat 2.1.

MORE INFORMATION

To create a link to an IRC channel, you can create a shortcut, insert a link on a Web page, or insert a link in an e-mail message (such as a Microsoft Outlook Express, Microsoft Outlook 97, Microsoft Exchange, or Microsoft Internet Mail and News message). To do so, use one of the following methods.

Create a Shortcut

To create a shortcut to the current room, click Create Shortcut on the File menu. This places a Comic Chat Room (CCR) file in the location you choose. To use the shortcut, double-click it.

To manually create a shortcut, right-click the desktop, point to New, click Shortcut, and then type the following information in the Command Line box

mic://<server name>/<room name>__<text/comics>___<password>

where <server name> is the name of the chat server, <room name> is the name of the chat room, <text/comics> is either "text" or "comics" (depending on which view you want), and <password> is your password for the chat room (if the chat room is password protected).

For example:
   mic://irc.msn.com/#Help__text___password

Note that there are two underscores before the text/comic switch. There are three underscores before the password switch.

Insert a Link on a Web Page

To insert a link on a Web page, use "%23" instead of "#." For example:
   <a href="mic://irc.msn.com/%23Help"> My help room -
      mic://irc.msn.com/#Help </a>

Insert a Link in an E-mail Message

To insert a link into an e-mail message, use the following format:

mic://<server name>/<room name>

Note that you can also use this format to connect to a chat room by clicking Start, clicking Run, and then typing the line in the Open box.
