SYMPTOMS

Paragraph marks that are deleted while the Track Changes While Editing (Word 97) or the Mark Revisions While Editing (Word 6.0, 6.0.1, or 7.0) feature is active are not removed (the line breaks that these paragraph marks contain are also retained).

If the non-printing characters are visible, the deleted paragraph marks will not be displayed with strikethrough formatting.

CAUSE

When Word tracks changes it does not actually delete text or other objects from a document. The text or object remains in the document and still effects the document's appearance.

WORKAROUND

The default marking method for deleted text is Strikethrough and blue color character formatting.

To see the document as it will appear after the revisions are accepted, use either of the following workarounds.

Method 1: Do Not Display the Revisions on the Screen

Clear the Highlight Changes On Screen option (Word 97) or the Show Revisions On Screen option (Word 6.0, 6.0.1, or 7.0).

To clear this option, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, point to Track Changes, Highlight Changes (Word 97). Or, click Revisions on the Tools menu (Word 6.0, 6.0.1, and 7.0).
  2. Select Mark Revisions While Editing(Word 6.0, 6.0.1, or 7.0) or Track Change While Editing (Word 97).
  3. Click to clear the Highlight Changes On Screen (Word 97) or the Show Revisions On Screen (Word 6.0, 6.0.1, or 7.0) check box.
  4. Click OK

Method 2: Change the Marking Method for Deleted Text to "Hidden"

To change the marking method for deleted text, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, point to Track Changes, and click Highlight Changes (Word 97). Or, click Revisions on the Tools menu (Word 6.0, 6.0.1, and 7.0).
  2. Click to select the Track Changes While Editing check box (Word 97) or the Mark Revisions While Editing check box (Word 6.0, 6.0.1, or 7.0).
  3. Click Options.
  4. Select Hidden as the mark for deleted text.
  5. Click OK twice.
