SYMPTOMS

When you double-click a Microsoft PowerPoint object (slide or presentation) that has been embedded or linked in a Microsoft Office for Windows document, you may receive the following error message:
Cannot start the source application for this object. There may not be enough memory available.
-or-
The server application, source file, or item can't be found. You should reinstall the server application.
-or-
Word cannot edit the Unknown.
-or-
Word cannot edit the PowerPoint Presentation.
-or-
Word cannot edit the PowerPoint.Slide.8

CAUSE

By design, you cannot edit an embedded or linked PowerPoint presentation because Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition is not an OLE Automation server.

WORKAROUND

To edit the original PowerPoint slide, open the PowerPoint presentation in PowerPoint. You can then copy the changes back to your document.

NOTE: If you copy a slide in Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh edition, the PowerPoint slide is converted to a picture object when pasted into an Office document.

To copy a PowerPoint slide:
  1. On the View menu, click Slide Sorter.
  2. Click the slide you want to copy.
  3. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
