PRJ: Task Start/Finish Different from Assignment Start/Finish (178187)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 2000
  • Microsoft Project 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q178187

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, a task's Start and Finish dates may be different than the Resource Assignment's Start and Finish dates for the resource assigned to that task.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the resource assigned to a task uses a calendar with different working times than the Project Calendar, and the task type is Fixed Duration. The task is scheduled by the Project calendar, and the Resource Assignment is scheduled by the Resource Calendar.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, change the Task Type to Fixed Units or Fixed Work by following these steps:
  1. Using the right mouse button, right-click the task and then click Task Information on the shortcut menu.
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. In the Task Type list, click to select Fixed Units, or Fixed Work, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.

MORE INFORMATION

For example, assign a task with a resource using the 24 Hours Calendar to start at 5:00 PM on Friday and finish at 1:00 AM on Saturday. If you change the Task Type to Fixed Duration, the task's Start time becomes 8:00 AM on Monday and the Finish time becomes 5:00 PM on Monday. The resource assignment's Start time remains 5:00 PM on Friday and the Finish time remains at 1:00 AM Saturday as expected.

NOTE: Similar behavior can also occur when a resources Work contour is modified, such as when a Delay or Leveling Delay is assigned to the Resource Assignment.
