System Files Appear on the Desktop (178157)

SYMPTOMS

After you install Internet Explorer, system files may appear on the desktop even if you have configured Windows 95 to hide system files.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you have system files on the desktop and you have installed the Windows Desktop Update component.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:

  • Move the system files to another folder. To move a file on the desktop, click Start, point to Programs, click Windows Explorer, and then drag the file from the desktop to a folder on your hard disk in Windows Explorer.
  • Remove the Windows Desktop Update component. For information about removing the Windows Desktop Update component, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

System files may be on the desktop if you have installed a program to the desktop or if you have saved system files to the desktop. System files on the desktop can interfere with the installation or operation of some programs.
