WD98: Changes Made to Subscription Lost (177989)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q177989

SYMPTOMS

Changes made to a subscription of a published edition of a drawn object are lost when the subscription is updated. This problem also occurs when you save the file, and then close and reopen it (because this series of actions causes the subscription to be updated).

If you double-click the subscription, you receive a dialog box stating
You cannot edit the result of a link or embedded object.

WORKAROUND

To modify the subscription, you must modify the published edition. When the subscription is updated, it will reflect the changes to the published edition.

Note that this behavior is different from the behavior of OLE objects. With OLE objects, changes to made to an embedded object are reflected in the original source.

To update a subscription, follow these steps:

  1. Select the subscription in the document.
  2. On the Edit menu, point to Publishing, and click Subscriber Options.
  3. Click Get Edition Now in the Subscription Options dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

When a subscription of a drawn object (for example a drawing from Claris Works 4.0 or a chart created in Microsoft Excel 98) is selected in a Word document, the picture toolbar is displayed. Any changes made to the subscription using the controls from the toolbar will be lost when the subscription is updated.
