WD: Word Fails to Start After Installing Internet Explorer (177953)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start Word, you may receive one of the following error messages:
The application "Microsoft Word" could not be opened because "Microsoft Component Library--DfReleaseSharedMalloc" could not be found.

-or-

The application "Microsoft Word" could not be opened because "Microsoft Component Library--CoSharedMemFree" could not be found.
These error messages may appear after you install Microsoft Internet Explorer.

WORKAROUND

Use the workaround appropriate for your version of Word and Internet Explorer (IE).

Word 98 and 6.x and Internet Explorer versions 3.0 and 3.0a

Turn the "MS IE ActiveX Lib (PPC)" extension off by following these steps:

  1. On the Apple menu, point to Control Panels, and then click Extensions Manager.
  2. Under Extensions, click to clear the "MS IE ActiveX Lib (PPC)" check box.

    Click Restart.

    NOTE: Disabling the "MS IE ActiveX Lib (PPC)" extension may disable some functionality when you connect to the Internet.

Word 98 and Internet Explorer 3.01a

After you install Internet Explorer 3.01a, reinstall Word 98 Macintosh Edition.
