WD: Error Message: "There Is Not Enough Memory or Disk Space to Complete the Operation" When You Save File (177756)

SYMPTOMS

When you open a large document or when you save a file that contains a large JPEG graphic as Rich Text Format (RTF), you receive the following error message:
There is not enough memory or disk space to complete the operation.

CAUSE

The document contains one or more large JPEG graphics, and Word does not have enough memory allocated to it to perform the correct conversion.

When you save a document that contains a JPEG graphic as RTF, the graphic is converted to a picture (PICT) file format, and the size of the graphic may increase dramatically.

This error message may also appear if the Minimum memory that is allocated to the program is set above the default or at the same amount as the Preferred memory.

NOTE: The Macintosh operating system cannot automatically allocate more memory to a program as it is required.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, increase the Preferred memory partition for the Word program to allow it to use enough memory to convert the large graphic image or to open the file. Or, you can reset the Minimum memory size that is allocated to the program. Word 98 has a Minimum memory size of 6,000 KB. Word 2001 has a Minimum memory size of 7,000 KB.

To increase or decrease the memory partition, follow these steps:
  1. Quit Word.
  2. Using the Finder, locate and click to select the Word program icon.
  3. Press COMMAND+I to open the Microsoft Word Info dialog box.
  4. Increase the Preferred size for Word by several thousand kilobytes (KB).
  5. If the Minimum memory has been increased, reset it to the default size.
  6. Repeat steps 1 through 4 until you can convert the graphic, until the error message does not appear, or until you have assigned all available memory to Word.
NOTE: To verify how much memory is available, select About This Macintosh on the Apple menu while the Finder is active.

If you work with large graphics often, you may want to leave the memory allocation set high. That decision should be made by considering the total memory available on the computer and how many other programs are normally run at the same time as Word.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
