Mutant: Error Message When You Start the Game (177507)

SYMPTOMS

When you start Goosebumps: Attack of the Mutant, you may receive one of the following error messages:
  • FATAL ERROR: The Direct X drivers for your video card do not support a 256-color 640 x 480 display mode, which is required by Goosebumps: Attack of the Mutant.
  • Your driver is not Windows 95 compatible.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you have an Alliance video card and the Windows Color Palette setting is set to High Color (16 bit).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following steps:
  1. Turn off Direct3D Hardware Acceleration. To do this, use the appropriate method below for your version of Windows:

    Windows 95

    1. Insert the Goosebumps: Attack of the Mutant CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
    2. Click Start, and then click Run.
    3. In the Open box, type the following line, and then press ENTER

      <CD-ROM drive>\setup\directx\dxsetup.exe

      where <CD-ROM drive> is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive.
    4. Click the Direct3D Hardware Acceleration Enabled check box to clear it, and then click OK.
    Windows 98

    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type the following line, and then press ENTER:

      c:\program files\directx\setup

    3. Double-click the Dxtool.exe icon.
    4. Click the Use Direct3D Hardware Acceleration check box to clear it.
    5. Click OK, and then close the Setup window.
  2. If the problem still occurs, reduce the graphics hardware acceleration. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click System.
    3. Click the Performance tab, and then click Graphics.
    4. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider until it is one notch to the right of None (the Basic acceleration setting).
    5. Click OK, and then click OK.
    6. Click Yes to restart your computer.
  3. If the problem still occurs, restore your original display drivers by following these steps (Windows 95 only):

    1. Insert the Goosebumps: Attack of the Mutant CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
    2. Click Start, and then click Run.
    3. In the Open box, type the following line, and then press ENTER

      <CD-ROM drive>\setup\directx\dxsetup.exe

      where <CD-ROM drive> is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive.
    4. Click Restore Display Drivers, and then click OK.
  4. If the problem is not resolved, contact your video card manufacturer for information about obtaining updated display drivers.
