Identd Packet Filter Required for Some Applications with Proxy 2.0 (176946)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0
This article was previously published under Q176946 SYMPTOMS
Some applications, such as File Transfer Protocol (FTP) or Internet
Relay Chat (IRC) may pause for long periods of time or fail to connect
when used from behind Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0 with packet filtering
select (enabled).
CAUSE
The packet filtering feature of Proxy Server 2.0 may be blocking
Identification Protocol (Identd) requests from the Internet. Some
Internet servers try to use the Identd protocol to identify other
hosts on the Internet.
RESOLUTION
The predefined filter for Identd needs to be added.
- Open the Winsock Proxy Service Properties, and
select the Service tab.
- Under the Shared Services section, select Security. Choose Add,
and select the Identd filter from the list of predefined filters.
This will allow Identd traffic to pass through instead of being
discarded by the proxy packet filter driver.
MORE INFORMATION
More information on the IdentD protocol can be found on the Internet
in the RFC 1413.
