XL98: Error Message Inserting a Locked File into a Module (176941)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, if you click File on the Insert menu in the Visual Basic Editor, select a file to insert, and then click Open, you may receive the following error message:
"<file name>" is locked, so you will not be able to save any changes.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the file that you are inserting has been locked in the Finder by following these steps:

  1. In the Finder, select the file.
  2. On the File menu, click Get Info.
  3. In the Info dialog box, click to select the Locked check box. Then, close the Info dialog box.

RESOLUTION

If you receive the error message that is described in the "Symptoms" section in this article, simply click OK. You can still save changes to the workbook even after you insert the locked file into a Visual Basic module.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
