PUB97: Problems with Numbered Lists in Word Story Editing (176550)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 97

This article was previously published under Q176550

SYMPTOMS

If you create a numbered list while using the Microsoft Publisher Word Story Editing feature, when you return to Publisher, the numbered list changes to having the numeral one for all numbered lines in the list.

CAUSE

Publisher 97 uses Word 97 to perform Word Story Editing. When Word 97 creates a numbered list, it uses some formatting that Publisher 97 does not correctly interpret.

This also happens if you first create the numbered list in Publisher 97 with single line-spacing, and then change the numbered list to double line- spacing while you are in Word Story Editing. This may be caused by some reformatting that Word 97 is doing to the numbered list.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, if possible, create the numbered list in Publisher 97 before you start Word Story Editing.

If you have already created the numbered list in Word Story Editing, use the following steps to re-number the list:
  1. In Publisher 97, highlight the numbered list.
  2. On the Publisher toolbar, click the Bullet button and select None.
  3. With the list still highlighted, click the Bullet button again and click More.
  4. Under Indent Settings, select Numbered List.
  5. If you want line spacing greater than 1, click the Line Spacing button, and set the line spacing to the desired amount. Click OK.
  6. Click OK to close the Indents And Lists dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Publisher 98 for Windows.
