This article describes how to create a Pop3.log file for Microsoft Outlook Express.

You can use the Pop3.log file to troubleshoot problems that may occur when you receive e-mail in Outlook Express using the Post Office Protocol (POP3).

To create a Pop3.log file, follow the appropriate method:

Outlook Express 4

  1. Start Outlook Express.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. On the Advanced tab, under Logging Options, click the Mail Transport check box to select it.
  4. Click Apply, and then click OK.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5

  1. Start Outlook Express.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. On the Maintenance tab, under Troubleshooting, click to select the Mail check box.
  4. Click Apply, and then click OK.
If you are running MSN, the Pop3.log file may be created and stored in:

C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\username\Mail folder


Where username is your MSN Member ID.

For Windows 98, if you are not using MSN, the Pop3.log file is created and stored in:

C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Mail folder

For Windows 2000, the Pop3.log file is created and stored in:

Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\User id\Microsoft\Outlook Express

For Windows NT, the Pop3.log file is created and stored in:

%Winnt%\Profiles\Username\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Mail folder

For Windows NT 4.0 is Pop3.log file is created and stored in:

%Winnt%\Profiles\username\Application Data\Identities\User id\Microsoft\Outlook Express
