PRJ98: Total BCWP May Not Show Correct Timephased BCWP (176309)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q176309

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, if you enter a percent complete value for a task prior to the start date of that task, total Budgeted Cost Of Work Performed (BCWP) for the task will not correctly show the total of timephased BCWP displayed in the timescale.

CAUSE

You are allowed to enter timephased % Complete values so that you can accurately reflect the progress on your schedule. The problem described in this article only occurs when you enter timephased % Complete values prior to the start date of the task. The total BCWP for the task will only show the BCWP that occurs after the start date of the task.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, set the Actual Start of the task to the first date that any work is done on the task. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. On the View menu, click Task Usage.
  2. On the View menu, click Table, and then click Tracking.
  3. Select the task for which the timephased % Complete values are prior to the start date of the task.
  4. In the Actual Start field for the task, enter the first date that any work is done on the task.
  5. Edit the timephased % Complete values to reflect when the other work was performed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.

This problem was corrected in Microsoft Project 98 for Windows, Service Release 1 (SR-1).
