WD98: Unexpected Behavior Moving Objects Having AutoCaptions (176306)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition
This article was previously published under Q176306 SYMPTOMS
When you move an object that has a caption that was created using the
AutoCaption feature, a new caption will be created for that object in the
new location. The old caption for that object will remain in its previous
location. This problem occurs regardless of the method you use to move the
object (by cutting and pasting it, by copying and pasting it, or by
dragging it).
CAUSE
The caption is not attached (connected) to the object it is captioning.
Word creates a new caption when an object is moved, provided the original
caption is not moved along with the object. This insures that each object
designated for AutoCaption will always have a caption associated with it.
WORKAROUND
Select the caption along with the captioned object before moving it. This
will prevent a new caption from being created.
NOTE: Once the caption is moved, the next time the fields are updated in
the document, the sequence field for that caption will be updated to
reflect the caption's new location with reference the other captions of
that type in the document.
To update fields, select the fields to be updated (in this case caption)
and press F9.
