PRJ98: Some Views Not Upgraded from 4.x Global Template (176302)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q176302

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when your global template is upgraded from an earlier version of Microsoft Project, the Delay Gantt, Detail Gantt, and Tracking Gantt views are not automatically upgraded.

CAUSE

Additional steps are required before the Detail Gantt, Delay Gantt, and Tracking Gantt views can be copied to your new global template. They cannot be upgraded automatically.

WORKAROUND

You will be able to manually upgrade these views after they are renamed. The following steps show you how to manually upgrade the Delay Gantt view. You can use these same steps to upgrade the Detail Gantt and the Tracking Gantt views.

  1. In Microsoft Project 98, on the File menu, click Open.
  2. Click to select the old Global Template file that contains the views you want to upgrade (most likely this will be named Global40.mpt), and then click OK.
  3. When the Organizer screen opens, you will see the contents of the Global file that you opened listed on the left side of the screen and the contents of the current Project 98 global file shown on the right. On the View tab, click to select Delay Gantt, and then click Rename.
  4. Change the name, for example, to Old Delay Gantt. Click OK.
  5. Click to select the renamed view, and then click Upgrade. You will see the view move to the Project 98 global view list.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.

MORE INFORMATION

If you install Microsoft Project 98 in the same directory as Microsoft Project 4.0 or later, the Setup program will rename the 4.x Global.mpt file to Global40.mpt. When you start Microsoft Project 98 for the first time it will automatically ask if you want to update the information in the old global file for use in Microsoft Project 98. If you say yes it will update the contents of the old global file with the exception of these three views. If you try to manually update these views as described in the steps in the "Workaround" section, you will not be able to update any of these three views unless you rename them.
