PRJ: Changing Task Type Reschedules Elapsed Duration (176301)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 2000
  • Microsoft Project 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q176301

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you change the Task Type to Fixed Units or Fixed Work and the duration for the Task was entered in elapsed days, the duration will change.

CAUSE

NOTE: A one-day elapsed duration task "1ed" represents 24 hours and ignores working and non-working time in a calendar. A one-day duration task "1d" represents 8 hours using the default working day and is scheduled based on working and non-working time in a calendar.

Changing the Task Type for a task with an elapsed duration to Fixed Units or Fixed Work changes the duration from elapsed to a working duration type.

For example, when you enter an elapsed duration for a task of "1ed", and you change the Task Type as described above, the 24 hours of duration is scheduled as 3 days.

WORKAROUND

After changing the Task Type, re-enter the correct duration in elapsed days.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.
