PRJ: Task with Finish-Finish Predecessor Scheduled Incorrectly (176291)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Project 2000
- Microsoft Project 98 for Windows
This article was previously published under Q176291 SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Project, when you assign a predecessor to a task that will
force that task to start before the project start date, the task will
incorrectly start on the project start date instead of before the Project
start date. You will not receive any error message informing you that the
link will not be honored.
The behavior occurs only if the link is a finish-to-finish link. Start-to-
start, finish-to-start, and start-to-finish links will move the task before
the project start date and give you the following error message:
The start of task (number, name) in (project name) is before the project starts.
WORKAROUND
To avoid this behavior, change the project start date. To do so, follow
these steps:
- On the Project menu, click Project Information.
- In the Start Date box, type the date of the earliest task in
the project.
If you want the task to start before the project start date, you can
substitute a start-to-start, start-to-finish, or finish-to-start link in
place of the finish-to-finish link. These links will move the task before
the project start date.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft
Project listed above.
