This article was previously published under Q176021 SYMPTOMS
If you perform an administrative installation of the Word 97 import
converter for Word 6.x and 7.x and then run the Setup.exe, you may receive
the following error message:
Microsoft Word 97 Converter setup was not completed for the following
reason: Setup could not determine a valid directory for the source
files. This may be caused, in certain circumstances, by running from a
network location with a long directory name, or from a read-only
location.
CAUSE
This problem occurs if you make the directory containing the expanded files
from Wrd97cnv.exe read-only.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use either of the following methods.
Method 1: Change the Share Permissions
The converter will be installed correctly if the share permissions are set
to include "Change" (RWXD).
Method 2: Change the File Permissions
Rather then setting the share to read-only, you can set the individual file
permissions in the share to read-only, leaving the share with "Change"
permissions.
