XL97: GET.DOCUMENT Function Returns Incorrect Document Name (175984)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows
This article was previously published under Q175984 SYMPTOMS
When you run a macro to return the name of the active workbook, the macro
returns the wrong name.
CAUSE
This problem occurs when you do the following:
- You run an Excel 4.0 macro that uses the GET.DOCUMENT(68) macro
function.
-and-
- The macro calls a function or subroutine that refers to or changes
the Visible property of the document window.
This problem occurs because the Visible property returns information that
the GET.DOCUMENT does not interpret correctly.

To work around this problem, use a Visual Basic for Applications procedure
instead of the Excel 4.0 macro. The following procedure in Visual Basic
returns the name of the current workbook in a message box:
Sub GetBookName()
MsgBox ActiveWorkbook.Name
End Sub STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products
listed at the beginning of this article.
MORE INFORMATION
In Microsoft Excel 97, the Excel 4.0 macro command GET.DOCUMENT(68) returns
the name of the current workbook that contains the active worksheet.
Because you can share a worksheet between different workbooks in Excel 4.0,
the GET.DOCUMENT function may return the name of more than one workbook. In
Microsoft Excel versions 5.0 and later, worksheets cannot be shared between
different workbooks; however, the GET.DOCUMENT function may incorrectly
return the name of another open workbook.
