XFOR: SMTP: IMS Double Quotation Marks Not Parsed Correctly (175848)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Commercial Internet System 1.0
This article was previously published under Q175848 SYMPTOMS
When you send mail to "user@investor"@MSN.com, a non-delivery report (NDR)
is returned even though it is a valid mailbox. The double quotation marks
are not being parsed correctly by Internet Mail Service.
CAUSE
The server did not properly handle addresses of the form
"user@investor.com"@msn.com <mailto:>
which is a legal address. When the addresses is received, it is parsed
properly; however, upon pulling it back from the Routing Table, the parser
was not used because the address was considered "clean" (that is, all
comments had been removed, and so on). These clean addresses locate the
domain by searching for the first @ sign and do not heed the quotation
marks.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Commercial
Internet Server 1.0 Service Pack 1.
A supported fix is now available, but has not been fully regression-tested
and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem.
Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft
recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix.
