INTRODUCTION

The North American versions of Microsoft Money require 128-bit strong data encryption to establish a more secure online connection. The Schannel.dll file provides data encryption. The strong 128-bit version of Schannel.dll is only available for distribution in the United States and Canada. The delivery method for the Schannel.dll file depends on the version of Money that you are using, the operating system on your computer, and the order of installation. This article describes how to obtain the correct version of the Schannel.dll file for your version of Money, Microsoft Windows, and Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Money requires a high level of data encryption when it connects to a server. Money has determined that your system cannot currently encrypt data at the level Money that requires. Money will not connect to a server until your system can support the required level of encryption.

To obtain the correct 128-bit version of the Schannel.dll file, follow these steps:
  1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. In the list of available downloads, click Internet Explorer 4 for Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT 4.0 High Encryption pack.
  3. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to download and install Internet Explorer 4.

Note if you have a later version of Internet Explorer 4 on your system, download the High Encryption pack for your version of Microsoft Internet Explorer.
With Internet Explorer 4.0 installed, the Setup program checks to see if you have 128-bit strong encryption. If you do not have the 128-bit Schannel.dll file installed, Internet Explorer installs the 40-bit Server Gated Cryptography (SGC) version of the Schannel.dll file. This SGC version is available for export outside the United States and Canada. When you install Money 5.0 on a computer that has this 40-bit version of the Schannel.dll file, Money does not install its version of the Schannel.dll file because the version of this file on the system is a later version.

When you install Money 98 on a computer that has Internet Explorer 4.0 installed, the Money Setup program does not start the Internet Explorer 3.02a installation because it is an earlier version. Therefore, the required 128-bit Schannel.dll file is not installed.
