SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when you click the File menu, you may receive one of the following error messages.

Windows 95

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the Problem persists, contact the program vendor.
If you click Details, you receive an error message similar to the following
WINPROJ caused and invalid page fault in module WINPROJ.EXE at 0137:3003ca9b.

Windows NT

An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

Winproj.exe
Exception: access violation (0xc0000005), Address: 0x3003ca9b

CAUSE

The entry that is placed on the recently used file list is not properly truncated. This problem occurs when you save or open a database by using an ODBC Data Source and you select the Selected Data option and an Import or Export Map.

NOTE: The recently used file list appears at the bottom of the File menu. It lists the recently opened files.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use either of the following methods.

Method 1: Add a Back Slash Character to the Import/Export Map name

Type a back slash (\) character at the beginning of the Import or Export Map name that you use for Selected Data so that it looks similar to the following:

\My Example Data Map

Method 2: Turn Off the Recently Used File List

Turn off the Recently Used File List by following these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the General tab.
  3. Click to clear the Recently Used File List check box.
  4. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.
