SYMPTOMS

When you try to start a service (for example, the FTP Publishing Service) either from the Services applet in Control Panel or from a command prompt, you may get one of the following error messages:

From the Services Applet

Could not start the <Service Name> service on \\<Computer Name>.
Error 1058: The specified service is disabled and cannot be started.

From the Command Prompt

System error 1058 has occurred.
The specified service is disabled and cannot be started.

CAUSE

The service that you are trying to start has been disabled for the current hardware profile.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue you need to enable the service using the following steps for your operating system:

For Windows NT 4.0:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Services icon.
  3. Select the service that you are trying to start and click HW Profiles.
  4. Select the current hardware profile and click Enable.
  5. Click OK.
You can now start the service manually or by setting it to Automatic.

For Windows 2000:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings and click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Administrative Tools icon.
  3. Double-click the Computer Management icon.
  4. Expand Services and Applications.
  5. Click on Services.
  6. Double-click the service you wish to enable and set it to automatic or manual.
