Linking

You cannot create relationships where the predecessor, successor, or both are linked to single portions of a split task. You cannot create links between split portions of different tasks or between a split portion and another task.

You can create links between entire tasks even when they contain splits. To do this, you can use a drag and drop operation to connect the predecessor task to the successor task. You must complete the entire predecessor task before you can schedule the successor task.

Assigning Resources

You cannot assign resources to individual split parts in the Gantt Chart or Calendar View. If you assign a resource to a task, it is always assigned to all of the split portions of the task. However, you can edit the assignment timephased work contour so that the resource does work on specific portions. If you later move the entire task, the contours will also be moved.

Gantt Chart Bar Styles for Split Tasks

Each task in Microsoft Project has two sets of bar styles and formatting: one for the task portions, and one for the split gaps. All split portions use one formatting and all split gaps use the other. You will not be able to format one split portion differently than another in the same task.
