Installing Internet Explorer to a Windows 95 Server-Based Setup (174452)

NOTE: For information about how to edit the registry, view the Changing Keys And Values online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). Note that you should make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat) before you edit the registry.

To install Internet Explorer in a SBS of Windows 95, follow these steps:

Server Installation

NOTE: Before you install Internet Explorer 3.02 in a SBS of Windows 95, verify that all clients are disconnected from the server. Do not permit clients to connect to the server while you install Internet Explorer 3.02. Follow these steps from a client connected to the server containing the SBS of Windows 95.

1. Type the following line at a command prompt, and then press ENTER

   del \\<server>\<share>\system\*.0??

   where <server> is the name of the SBS server, and <share> is the location of the SBS Windows 95 folder. This removes files that may conflict with the installation of Internet Explorer 3.02.
2. Use Registry Editor to change the value of the second byte (of four) from "00" to "01" in the following registry key:

         HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ 
         SetupFlags
   						

   For example, if the current value is "2c 00 00 00", change the value to "2c 01 00 00."
   
   NOTE: If you do not set the value to "01," you cannot copy the Internet Explorer Setup files from the client to the server.
3. Quit Registry Editor.
4. Run Internet Explorer 3.02 Setup from a local disk. Install Internet Explorer to the Windows 95 SBS share. Click No when you are prompted to restart your computer.
5. Use Registry Editor to change the value of the second byte (of four) from "01" to "00" in the following registry key:

         HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ 
         SetupFlags
   						

   For example, if the current value is "2c 01 00 00", change the value to "2c 00 00 00."
   
   NOTE: This restores the original state of the registry.
6. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the client computer.
7. Use Server Manager to disconnect any open connections between the server and the SBS client from which you installed Internet Explorer.
8. From another client, type the following line at a command prompt, and then press ENTER

   copy \\<server>\<share>\system\*.001 \\<server>\<share>\system\*.dll

   where <server> is the name of the SBS server, and <share> is the location of the Windows 95 SBS folder. This copies files that were in use by the SBS client when you installed Internet Explorer 3.02.
9. Restart the client, and confirm that Internet Explorer is working correctly.

Client Installation

NOTE: If programs that require a restart of the SBS client have been installed, but the client has not been restarted, restart the client before running Internet Explorer Setup.

To install Internet Explorer on each client, follow these steps:

1. Run Internet Explorer Setup from the Windows 95 SBS folder. Install to the following folder

   \\<server>\<share>\Program Files

   where <server> is the name of the SBS server, and <share> is the location of the SBS Windows 95 folder.
2. Restart your computer when prompted.
