SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you enter dates for an existing task, the duration may not be calculated based on the dates entered.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the task is a milestone. Since the duration of a milestone is zero days, it will disregard one of the two dates you enter.

WORKAROUND

To calculate the duration, follow the appropriate steps for your situation:

Microsoft Project 98

  1. Select the task in Gantt Chart view.
  2. On the Project menu, click Task Information.
  3. In the Task Information dialog box, change Duration to 1d.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Repeat Steps 1 and 2.
  6. In the Task Information dialog box, re-enter the start and finish dates for the task. You must re-enter the dates even if one of them is correct.
  7. Click OK.

For Microsoft Project 4.0, 4.1, 4.1a

  1. Select the task in Gantt Chart view.
  2. On the Insert menu, click Task Information.
  3. In the Task Information dialog box, change Duration to 1d.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Repeat Steps 1 and 2.
  6. In the Task Information dialog box, re-enter the start and finish dates for the task. You must re-enter the dates even if one of them is correct.
  7. Click OK.

Microsoft Project 3.0 and 3.0a

  1. Select the task in Gantt Chart view.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Form.
  3. In the Task Edit Form dialog box, change Duration to 1d.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Repeat Steps 1 and 2.
  6. In the Task Edit Form dialog box, re-enter the start and finish dates for the task. You must re-enter the dates even if one of them is correct.
  7. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.
